SOFT ROT

This is caused by several strains of the Erwinia bacteria. Where plant tissue has been bruised or damaged in any way, it gains entry and consumes the cell walls. It thrives in humid conditions at increased temperatures and is a problem with stored vegetables and bulbs. Infected tissue has a distinctive rotting smell and goes on to invade surrounding material.
